Product Chemistry Testing Capabilities

Smithers performs a full suite of physicochemical tests on conventional and biological crop protection products ranging from pure, stable, active ingredients to formulated products, unknown or variable compositions, complex reaction products, and biological materials (UVCBs), and reactive mixtures. Testing is conducted with reference to worldwide guidelines, that include, but are not limited to, test methods described by OECD, OPPTS, EU, CIPAC and UN/CLP. Examples of our available tests include:
  • Appearance (color, odor, and physical state)
  • Melting/freezing point
  • Boiling point, distillation range, and decomposition temperature
  • Relative density
  • Viscosity
  • Surface tension
  • Vapor pressure
  • Dissociation constant
  • Water solubility
  • Partition coefficient
  • Evaluation of solution/extraction behavior in water (e.g. polymers, metals, nanoparticles)
  • Other tests are available upon request
Our experts offer wide-ranging experience of plant protection and biocidal formulation testing for physical properties, including across a variety of challenging formulation types. This suite of tests is designed and conducted in compliance with CIPAC test requirements and reference to specific guidance documents.

Hazardous Properties Testing

Testing for the classification of chemicals with hazardous properties can be conducted by Smithers employing specialist facilities and UN or EU Test Methods and CLP guidelines.

Our scientists are also able to provide hazardous property test expert statements, with or without the use of screening techniques such as DSC.
  • Flash point
  • Flammability
  • Flammability (Contact with Water)
  • Pyrophoric Properties
  • Explosive Properties
  • Auto-ignition Temperature
  • Relative Self-Ignition Temperature
  • Oxidizing Properties
  • Explosivity
  • Corrosion Testing
  • Oxidation/Reduction Chemical Incompatibility

Storage Stability Testing

Smithers facilities enable stability tests to be conducted under a variety of storage conditions, and we routinely perform cold temperature, accelerated storage, and long-term ambient storage testing. The teams are well versed in the design of stability studies with the appropriate chemical and physical characterization tests at specified timepoints. These designs often work in a complementary fashion with the physical chemical testing on the unstressed material.

Evaluation and Characterization Testing

Our combination of expert knowledge, experience, and comprehensive instrumentation makes us an ideal partner in support of characterization tests, whether for individual certifications to support regulatory studies or stand-alone analyses.
