Vehicle OEMs are critically aware of the importance of good highway steering behaviour to customer satisfaction. Road vehicles should not persistently attempt to deviate from the desired lane. This can be manifested as “drift”, if the vehicle changes lanes when the steering wheel is released, or “pull” if noticeable steering effort is required to maintain the lane.

Along with many vehicle characteristics, tire properties such as plysteer residual aligning torque (PRAT), and residual cornering force (RCF) have a strong effect on vehicle drift and pull. These tire properties are always specified by OEMs, to ensure that tire and suspension work together to deliver satisfactory highway behavior.
