(Akron, Ohio) – Smithers, a leading provider of testing, consulting, information, and compliance services, has announced plans to expand its medical device physical and functional testing with a new laboratory in Akron, Ohio.

The laboratory will offer extensive standard and custom testing to qualify a wide range of devices, including:
  • Pen, jet, and auto injectors
  • Prefilled syringes
  • Needle-based injection systems (NISs)
  • Cartridge / pump dispensers
  • Injection vials and caps
  • Small bore connectors for liquids and gases
  • Transfusion and IV sets
  • Smart patches / patch pumps
  • Metered dose inhalers (MDIs)
  • Device packaging
This laboratory is an extension of the company’s global medical device testing services in North America and the United Kingdom and will be located at the Bounce Innovation Hub in Akron.

“Smithers has been a partner to the life sciences industry for many years, and we are constantly seeking feedback from our clients regarding their testing and validation needs,” said Gael Peron, Vice President of Medical Device Testing, Smithers. “Our North American clients have asked for a functional and mechanical device testing laboratory in the United States with the same capabilities and expertise as our established lab in the United Kingdom. This expansion of our global portfolio will result in faster turn-around times and more efficient product development processes for our clients here in North America.”

Smithers has aggressively been expanding its service portfolio in support of the life sciences industry. In 2017, Smithers opened a new analytical chemistry laboratory in Akron, Ohio, making it one of the few contract research organizations offering extractables and leachables assessments in both North America and Europe. That same year, Smithers established a dedicated facility for medical device functional testing in Shawbury, United Kingdom, after years of conducting this testing in Leatherhead. Over the past two years, both the United Kingdom and US analytical chemistry teams invested in additional chemists and new instrumentation to increase capacity and broaden the expertise for client support with world-class capabilities. Smithers also has many years of experience offering package and distribution testing on both continents.

Earlier this year, Smithers announced the formation of the Medical Device Testing (MDT) division. This division was established to offer focused support to the needs of the innovative and thriving medical device and combination drug product industries. Smithers appointed Gael Peron as Vice President of the new division. This laboratory is the first of multiple planned expansions under Peron’s leadership.
