Report definition
The report covers production of cans, which Smithers call fillings, and in certain cases there is the addition of net imports. Inventories are left out as they are usually small and very difficult to quantify in a top-down analysis. For the intensity of fillings comparison, Smithers use fillings per equivalent person or fillings per capita. This is packaging converted plus empty imports minus empty exports. This is not to be confused with consumption, which is usually arrived at from companies providing data on goods sold.

The Smithers methodology
This report is based on extensive primary and secondary research. Primary research consisted of targeted interviews with material suppliers, converters and experts drawn from key markets. This was supported by secondary research in the form of extensive literature analysis of published data, official government statistics, domestic and international trade organisation data, company websites, industry reports, trade press articles, presentations, and attendance at trade events.

Who should buy the report?

  • Metal can converters
  • Beverage and food brands
  • Industrial packaging and bulk logistics companies
