Smithers invests in new IPLR, footprint, and load deflection testing capabilities at Ohio laboratory

The Smithers Tire & Wheel Test Center has invested in new equipment to measure footprint, load deflection, and inflation pressure loss rate (IPLR)

The lab’s new IPLR testing room was designed to meet the needs of Smithers clients. With two separate HVAC systems, the room has two independent temperature zones for measuring how quickly a tire loses air pressure over a given time period.

“The everyday driver may know that proper tire inflation improves fuel efficiency, but they may not realize that it also increases the lifespan of the tire, makes for better handling, and improves overall safety,” said Matt Kent, Technical Director, Smithers Tire & Wheel Test Center. “Because tire companies know how important tire inflation is, they’ll find this new testing capability beneficial as they strive to deliver the best driving experience to their customers.”

Smithers also invested in a new footprint and load deflection machine, which was custom built for the Smithers Tire & Wheel Test Center. The new machine conducts footprint shape and pressure distribution testing for passenger, truck, and bus radial tires, including Super Singles, and has an additional position for longitudinal, lateral, and vertical spring rate testing.

“This investment means we can offer better testing lead times and support our clients even as their data requirements change,” said Kent. “Our long-standing relationships in the tire industry are our top priority, and we choose all our new capabilities based on what our valued customers need.”
