Smithers has announced several new investments and expansions at its analytical services laboratory in Akron, Ohio.

Upgraded LCMS instrumentation

A second liquid chromatography—mass spectrometry (LCMS) instrument has been added to the laboratory to allow for increased laboratory capacity and capabilities. The new high resolution instrument is a Q-Exactive Orbitrap LCMS from Thermo Fisher Scientific and is capable of delivering very high resolution, accurate mass spectrometry results.

“Our growth strategy is determined by what our clients need,” said Paul Cummings, General Manager, Analytical Services, Smithers. “This instrument increases our capacity, so we can offer faster turnaround times and support our clients’ product development and regulatory submission timelines.”

New associate scientist

Associate scientist Katie Harper has joined the team at the analytical services laboratory in Akron. Prior to joining Smithers, Harper worked at Oakwood Labs in Solon, Ohio.

“Someone once told me that by working in the pharmaceutical and development device industry, we have the opportunity to reach thousands more patients in shorter periods,” said Harper. “I look forward to continuing to provide the answers that ultimately support our clients in helping patients and society live happier, safer lives.”

“Katie has an extremely strong technical background and experience with contract research organizations, including method development, complex sample preparation, and data analysis,” said Cummings. “With Katie on the team, we’re expanding the capacity and breadth of expertise that our clients expect from us.”

Harper has a Bachelor’s of Science in biology from Walsh University.
