Two Smithers team members have presented a webinar on transit testing for single-use systems in partnership with Bio-Process Systems Alliance (BPSA).
 
The webinar provides an overview of a BPSA whitepaper released in February 2021 titled “Transit Testing Guidance for Single-Use Components and Assembles.” The whitepaper was produced by a committee of subject matter experts from eight different companies and universities in the industry over the course of 18 months. The project was funded by BPSA and is available for download.
 
The committee was led by two Smithers team members: Rich Salzstein, Business Development Manager, Medical Device Testing, and James Raw, Operations Director of Packaging Testing. Salzstein and Raw have worked with fellow committee member Elisabeth Vachette of Sartorius Stedim Biotech to create and present the webinar that will introduce the central concepts of the whitepaper. The webinar originally ran on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. A recording of the webinar is now available for download.
 
The webinar covers: 

• Why transit testing matters
• The importance of risk assessment in developing a testing program
• Different elements and levels of packaging for single-use systems, from primary packaging to bulk handling and warehouse storage
• Comparison of laboratory testing versus field testing
• Common test methods and standards, including ASTM and ISTA
• Implementation and reporting

“Single-use systems are used to deliver and administer critical therapies and treatments, so their sterility, integrity, and durability are crucial,” said Salzstein. “This whitepaper and webinar will provide an overview of how transit testing can help manufacturers ensure that their single-use systems can withstand the rigors of the supply chain and reach the patient intact.”
