A diagram of paper creasing tests showing multiple folds of paper. The mechanical ease of folding crease lines is critical to automated carton erection machines. The creasing quality of carton boards or "creaseability" is the range of press conditions over which a carton board will fold well. A good carton fold should be free from fold cracking or liner splitting and show good rib formation.

A creasing study, made in combination with a determination of board and crease stiffness, can be used to help specify folding boxboards and white lined chipboards suitable for high speed carton machine applications.

Accreditation and standards

Smithers can assess the creasing quality of carton boards using a Smithers board creaser conforming to BS 4818.
