Webinar: Compounding 104: Anti-Degradant Packages

Webinar: Compounding 104: Anti-Degradant Packages

Original run date: Thursday, March 28, 2019, 11:00 a.m. | download below

Natural rubber and most synthetic rubbers contain unsaturated carbon-carbon double bonds in their backbones. These sites on the backbone are susceptible to oxygen and ozone attack, and the presence of light, heat, metals, and flexing can greatly accelerate the degradation process. The addition of anti-degradants to the rubber compound offers protection against such attacks and will greatly extend the service life of vulcanized rubber products.

Download our one-hour webinar on anti-degradants from a compounder's perspective. Christine Domer, General Manager of Smithers’ analytical and physical testing labs, discusses degradation mechanisms, the main theories of the anti-oxidant and anti-ozonant protection mechanisms, and the types of anti-degradants available. Christine also covers:
  • How and why different polymer systems change with age.
  • What physical property changes to expect on aging.
  • How anti-degradant packages are chosen to slow the aging process for given polymers and products.
  • Some example anti-degradant systems in several rubber product applications

This webinar is the third in a five-part series on rubber compounding. Headquartered in the rubber capital of the world, Smithers has been serving the rubber industry for nearly 100 years. With this webinar series, the experts at Smithers aim to provide a functional understanding of the basics of rubber compounding to anyone in the rubber industry, regardless of background, job role, or experience.
