Cyberspace and Digital Policy (CDP), the newly created bureau of the US Department of State, has begun operations. It was announced in October that the CDP bureau would be created. In the CDP bureau, we will examine cyberspace, digital technologies, and digital policy implications for national security, economic growth, and US values. Technology will be incorporated into policy decisions by the bureau.
The new cybersecurity bureau reflects the growing importance of cybersecurity in national policy, economy, and defense. State Department officials say the CDP bureau consists of three policy units: International Cyberspace Security, International Information and Communications Policy, and Digital Freedom. By the end of the year, the State Department expects 100 employees to work there. Federal government digital modernization will also be facilitated by the newly established office.
This position will be filled by a Senate-confirmed Ambassador-at-Large. As Senior Bureau Official, Jennifer Bachus, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service and previous deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Prague, Czech Republic, will take on a new role. While awaiting the confirmation of the Ambassador-at-Large, Bachus will serve in this capacity.In addition, there are the following key positions:
Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Cybersecurity, Michele Markoff. Overseeing cyberspace policy initiatives at the State Department since 1998, Markoff is a senior subject matter expert.
Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Communication and Information Policy, Stephen Anderson. In addition to leading the development and negotiation of international Internet, data, and privacy policies, Anderson will be responsible for negotiating with foreign governments. The State Department's Bureau for International Organization Affairs previously employed Anderson as director of the Office of Specialized and Technical Agencies.
As Acting Digital Freedom Coordinator, Blake Peterson. Prior to joining the White House, Peterson worked in the Office of the Secretary as a Senior Policy Advisor for Internet governance and gender equity in national security policy.
