Impact Testing at Smithers: Izod and Charpy Testing

Our polymer testing laboratories are equipped with the standard Izod and Charpy instruments, which enable us to perform mpact testing on injection molded or machined standard test pieces. We are also able to offer a falling drop weight impact testing for products or pipe samples. For plastic film materials, we can undertake a falling weight impact resistance test.

Facilities exist to determine these properties down to the sub-ambient temperature of -60°C.

We have extensive sample preparation capabilities - including a CNC machine and on-site molding capabilities. This enables us to perform impact tests on a large variety of materials and product forms.

Common Standards for Impact Testing

  • BS EN ISO 180— Plastics. Determination of Izod impact strength
  • BS ISO 179-1— Plastics -- Determination of Charpy impact properties -- Part 1: Non-instrumented impact test
  • BS 2782:Part 3:Method 352D— Methods of testing plastics. Mechanical properties. Determination of falling weight impact resistance of thin flexible sheet (film)
  • ASTM D746— Standard Test Method for Brittleness Temperature of Plastics and Elastomers by Impact
