The grammage or 'basis weight' of paper, board and tissue is determined by weighing a known area after conditioning in a standard 23°C, 50%rh environment for a minimum of 24 hours. Results are usually quoted as gsm or g/m2.

This is included as part of our Paper Proficiency Service

We can also test the grammage of components (the grammage of the separate papers which make up corrugated fibreboard, i.e. liners and flutings).

Standards and accreditation

Smithers are UKAS accredited for grammage testing to British Standard BS EN ISO 536 and International Standard ISO 536.

For the grammage testing of components, we can test to International Standard ISO 3039.
