Pore size and pore size distribution can influence the airflow, filtration and barrier characteristics of paper and other porous materials. Testing can help characterise materials, compare samples and investigate differences in performance.

During testing, the sample is soaked in paraffin and subjected to an increasing vacuum. As the pressure changes, pores are opened progressively from the largest downwards. Measurements of differential flow rate and pressure are then used to determine the distribution of the largest pore sizes within the material.

Typical applications include medical papers, cigarette papers and other breathable or porous materials.
