Many elastomers are chemically cross-linked with sulfur. This sulfur cure or vulcanization process imparts the recovery properties for which rubber is noted. Sulfur vulcanization promotes strength, toughness, fatigue resistance and improved wear characteristics to the completed product. Quantitative sulfur determination is necessary to permit reconstruction of a sulfur-cured rubber formulation.

Smithers utilizes the LECO analyzer method to provide quantitative data on sulfur content, which involves the introduction of heat and oxygen to the sample.  Once sulfur dioxide is released, an IR detection system measures the total amount of sulfur as a percentage.
