These test methods are used to evaluate the physical changes in a plastic sample, associated with the degree of uniformity compared to other samples, to determine the average density, or specific gravity, of a larger sample or product.
There are two test methods described in the standard:
By using these test methods, an average density is calculated because it is possible that different parts of a sample differ in density due to differences in crystallinity, thermal history, porosity, and composition (types such as resin, plasticizers, fillers, etc).
Types of products / materials generally tested by our laboratory (common uses):
Solid plastic products such as sheets, rods, tubes or molded items
*Please Note: The information outlined above is to be used as reference ASTM D792 Standard Test Methods for Density and Specific Gravity (Relative Density) of Plastics by Displacement. Please refer to ASTM International for full details and the most current revision.
