Blocking can be influenced by factors including residual solvents, plasticisers and static, and can affect the handling, separation and processing of flexible packaging materials.
Smithers provides testing in accordance with ASTM D918 for materials including:
- Impregnated, coated or laminated papers
- Coated and laminated metallic foils
- Polymer films and plastic laminates
Testing exposes materials to defined conditions of temperature, relative humidity and pressure for a specified period, allowing different climatic conditions to be simulated. Blocking resistance is then assessed using three classifications: no block, some block or well blocked.
