Heat sealability testing can help identify the sealing conditions required to achieve consistent seal performance, support material or supplier comparisons, and investigate heat seal failures.
Replicate seals are prepared using a matrix of sealing temperature, dwell time and pressure. The resulting seals can be visually assessed and mechanically tested to determine the relationship between sealing conditions and seal strength, helping establish the optimum heat seal window for the material.
Seal strength can be determined in accordance with ASTM F88, which is also used in the evaluation and validation of seals for medical device packaging.
Smithers can also assess the heat sealability of heat-seal blister boards, using an adapted sealing arrangement appropriate to the material.
Heat sealability and heat seal window analysis can form part of wider technical investigations into film, seal and blister-pack failures.
